I think safety is more important than freedom because if their were no rules for people to follow then they could do anything they wanted without any consequences and therefore they would continue to do it even if it was wrong because no one could tell them not too.

I think safety is more important than freedom because it would be hard to cooperate with others if everyone wanted to behave there own way. Also without laws you’d be living in constant fear since no one would get punished for what they might do for example there could be a higher possibility for you to get robbed and such. Living in fear of the unexpected is not being free

I have to say I agree and disagree with Thomas Hobbes’ theory. I agree in a way that I see where he is coming from when he says “you’d be living life in constant fear” and that “even the weakest could kill the strongest with stealth”. BuBut I disagree because as they said at the end of the video, it could result in a frighteningly powerful government or monarch/president. I say this because I can relate this idea to thing happen in the modern world, e.g. Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un, and Boris Johnson!

I think that security is more important because if there were no rules in place and there was no government people would do what ever they wanted to do and people would live in the fear that someone might hurt them or even kill them. So I think that security is more important because you know that you would be safe and most of the people are respecting the rules or laws.I think that security is more important now because of the corona virus outbreaks. It’s is important now because people have to go into quarantine and the shops for example loads of people are coming to get food and supplies, so you would need security to make sure that people aren’t taking too much and leaving enough for other people.

I agree with Thomas Hobbes in saying that freedom is good but security is better, because if everyone had freedom and there was no rules or laws, things like killing and stealing would be allowed. If this happened then nobody would be able to survive. If we are left to do what we want, what we want is to kill and steal and without government we wouldn't survive? What does this mean about your view of what it means to be human?I think that most people would be ok with living without rules but for example if someone was hungry and they had no money and there were no rules against stealing then they might steal food or money off other people which might cause people to react by killing or hurting the person who stole something...

I believe that safety is more important than freedom, because being safe in a controlled, maybe caged environment would be better than a dangerous, unsafe but free life. Freedom may be more valued than safety but I feel like people take freedom and safety for granted, and many have not experienced a dangerous, or not free life.

The sad thing about life it always comes to an end so I think freedom you will have more of a chance to be happy and thats what you need in life it may be short but at least you didn’t live a long miserable life.

I think safety and freedom go hand in hand. If you have freedom you can’t be safe. If you have safety you can’t be free. If we had too much freedom we could go around doing what ever we want e.g killing people with out getting in trouble and thinking it’s right. If we had too much safety we wouldn’t be prohibited to do many things and wouldn’t be free.

In my opinion safety is obviously very important. But, without freedom, we are not human. Humans need basic freedom like being able to speak freely. We also need safety to be healthy. So i think both are equally important.

I think a safety is more important than freedom. As you would be living in constant fear because there would be no laws and more chance of getting assaulted or something like that. So I think with safety everyone will feel safe and wouldn’t live in constant fear.

With the safety of being in a modern society with laws and set ways to live we sacrifice our freedom. We still have some freedom as long as it is inside the laws. Still most places on earth are owned by a country which has laws. So in this way we can never be completely free. Perhaps even our bodys are keeping us from being completely free. Safety within society is often not truly free at all. There is always discrimination and segregation inside these and while those remain I don’t think that we will be able to have true safety.

I think that safety is more important than freedom due to the fact we can be free while also being safe. There are no rules saying you can't be safe and free. Safety should be a top priority if I was just free and wasn't bothered about safety I could injure myself or worse but if I was safe and not free at least I know I wouldn't be hurt by anything except boredom.

I think freedom is more important than safety because even if you were secure and safe there are so many things in freedom that would be taken away e.g freedom of speech, freedom to go where you want, freedom to marry/love who you want. So while you are kept safe(alive and well) really what would you be living for... you wouldn’t be free to do anything you desire you would practically just be locked up living life like a programmed robot.

I think safety is more important than freedom because if you are free to do whatever you want you could go and injure somebody or kill your self but if your are safe u can’t hurt your self and do something illegal

Safety is more important because without safety people get hurt but it depends on what you consider freedom or safety.

I think safety is more important than safety because without safety you could be killed or taken from your family then the person would not have either.

Considering the unrest in Dublin last week, do you think we should give up our freedom to gain more security?

Freedom means having a life where you can do what you want - to an extent. You can't go kill people. Or steal or rob or put busses on fire. We should give up the freedom to do bad things to protect others.

It depends on whether you mean online or real word policing. I think we need more armed police in Dublin following last weeks riots. We won't lose freedom we get freedom because we are safe to walk around. I think the guards should stay as they are in mindset as in protecting peace but have the power to use weapons in a way to threat people and put them off.

I think safety is more important, as if you just chose freedom, you would obviously be able to do anything without repercussions, but if you are attacked, robbed etc. no one is obliged to help you.

I think Safety is needed to a degree- Yes, we need gardaí who can defend against Justice (and even if that means guns and baton.) however we need gardaí who are free from corruption.

This sounds like a delicate balancing act. How do you think this could be achieved? We have the same number of Gardai in Dublin as 20 years ago. Could it be a problem of numbers? Or should they be trained to deal with big riots that are common in other cities?
