I think Plato would look at this as a learning moment. The World Cup does unify people through the joy of supporting your nation but I think in this case we shouldn't watch it as there is just so much wrong with the event to actually enjoy it as entertainment. Imagine sitting in one of the stadiums just knowing people died building it. I personally would not be able to enjoy it.

What questions does Roy Keane raise about this World Cup?

What are the players afraid of? Why are people not exercising freedom of speech? What are we not standing up? Who has silenced them? Where is the line? Why aren't we using our voice?

So should we watch the World Cup? The easy answer is no. The whole event is tainted and even watching is engaging with something that is challenging to our morals and value system. If we are calling it black and white then no do not watch it. But obviously it is more complicated than that. What do you think the answer is?

I think that we should educate ourselves so we know and understand what is going on with the World Cup. I don't see a problem with watching it as long as we are educated. In the past when World Cups were held in places like Russia and Brazil, we didn't kick up a fuss and there were lots of problems and human rights problems there too. We make lots of harmful decisions everyday and we ignore it. Like where our meat comes from or cheap clothes or all the everyday actions that affect the climate. Same thing in some ways

I agree. You have to be aware of the issues and know the context of what you are watching - I think it is wrong to ignore them. I think it is ok to watch it then

You can watch it like you said as long as you stay aware and bring that awareness to the issues in Quatar. You still be allowed to enjoy watching the World Cup and the community it brings out with uniting countries but keep in mind the situation behind it. It was interesting that Roy Keane asked why the players are saying they are being silenced but by who? 25/11/2022 10:16:08 am
I think that we should watch the World Cup because it brings loads of people together from all over the world for this one event

People can watch the World Cup but have to be aware of the issues currently surrounding Quatar and not just brush them off and ignore them. The German team covered their mouths to symbolise having no freedom of speech in Quatar. I think this made a small impact on the event but they could do more and just wear the OneLove arm bands. I think if more teams took part in this protesting then it would have a bigger impact. I think that the German team has set an example and soon other teams will follow.

I think watching the World Cup while also showing that we do not respect the laws that are put in place by quatar. I think we should watch it because of the rarity and it should be a celebration. It brings together all football fans to support their country of choice. Roy Keane said that leadership should be about action and like the German team the teams should wear the armband that shows your solidarity with the LGBTQ community

No matter what the ethics are billions of football fans will be watching because it only comes every 4 years. The German team covered their mouths in the photo as a response to not being able to wear the One Love arm band and I think it is a great thing but will have little outcome.

I think that it probably should not be shown in school but people can watch it at home. If schools show it they should educate students into what went on because we are supposed to learn at school.

I agree about the schools. It shouldn't be shown in schools because of all the issues and we learn about these so what sort of message are we giving.

What people do in their own time is up to them. If a school is going to show it they should educate the students on the problems

I don't think it should be shown in schools because a school should teach us to stand up for what we believe in and also tells us it is ok to be gay and its a safe place but are supporting something like this. The school shouldn't give in on an issue like this when the repercussions it could have on a student could be massive

I disagree with some comments and views here. I think you can't stop someone or judge them for wanting to watch it as entertainment - it is a basic human desire. But for those who do watch the World Cup they need to be aware of the ethical issues behind the event in Quatar such as poor women's rights and discrimination against the LGBTQ people. I think they should be aware of the issues surrounding it as it is so corrupt and just because we accept other corrupt things doesn't mean we have to keep accepting and ignoring corruption. It is not a good argument to say because it has always happened it should continue to happen. Maybe it doesn't affect you or your gay friends in Ireland but we should stand up in solidarity. And quatar didn't have a history of football and only hold it to get money and show the rest of the world they are important. Around 6000 people died alone in just building the stadiums.

I don't think what quatar is doing is right in any shape or form. I personally don't have much of an interest in football so I am not watching it nor do I support it. I don't think its the right thing to do to be watching it or supporting it but no matter what there will be people watching the football. There's no stopping people from doing what they want. Many people have a passion for football so they will watch it no matter what the circumstances are. I think its bad to be watching it if you are uneducated about the context but them watching it on TV is not going to affect anyone. I don't think it is right fir the school to be showing it because they are promoting the idea that it is okay to be supporting Quatar in this circumstance. It is not right to gloss over the fact that thousands of people have died building the stadiums and now against LGBTQ+ and human rights. I think if the school is going to stream it the least they could do is educated people on what's going on

I think he is being hypocritical as he is there and is he standing up? We watched the World Cup from Russia and Brazil and their human rights are not so ethical either.

Action for change. Address what is wrong and move forward from it. I think the managers and all the football teams need to make a statement to address this. If only one team does it it may not make a big enough difference and they can be singled out by Quatar for punishment. It should be played at school as people will do it anyway but at least this way you can educate people on the issues.

The sanctions cannot effect the Players, they have such massive platforms and they have so much wealth, the scandal if FIFA try to sanction any player, or attempt to kick them out of the World cup, the scandal will be so large, that it just outweighs trying to sanction any player, and it will effect Qatar and FIFA so negatively.

I think it is outrageous that there is such a big number of people losing their lives over building the stadiums. In 2022 we should all have respect for different sexualities and cultures and we should stand up against dictatorships. Footballers should be the main event and politics of Fifa and Quatar have no right to impose their laws onto sport.

Even though players could lose their jobs by showing their solidarity for the LGBTQIA+ I think that peoples right are more important. If all teams wear the OneLove bands it will make a difference because so many people watch the World Cup and so many people are influenced by players.

I don’t think it makes a difference. I am a realist and these things will be forgotten so there is no use in getting stressed about it. Just watch football- bad things happen every where. But of course I don’t agree with their laws but it’s none of my business

Regarding whether we should watch it at school, I don't think so because what they are doing is wrong and we should be learning about it instead of enjoying it. I don't want it to be successful in a way for quatar even though I love football.

I think that you shouldn't be forced to watch it or even see it at school but be able to watch it at your own choice.

I don't think you can really force anyone to do something here but we are lucky to have the freedom to choose as that is the point of this discussion. We have the luxury of watching football if we want, to be free in our sexuality and free to get educated whatever our gender. Think its just hypocritical a bit after last week's stand up thing but lots of things are hypocritical at school anyway

I think two questions here. It depends on if you are a realist or an idealist. Ms Andrews is probably a idealist which is philosophy as its full of ideas. But its a good question to think about - is it a human right to watch football or is it a privilege I think its our right so that's why at school we should be allowed watch it. Not everything at school is about education. Its also about learning to be together like the outside world

I think there is no harm in it and its unfortunate what happens in Quatar but its separate to the game. Sport and politics should be separate - like music

I disagree with the person who said that we should criticise the World Cup being in quatar because they have no history of football like Brazil say. I think its hypocritical to be against Quatar if you think we should welcome everyone. We should respect their laws if we are guests in their country

Even if those laws go against global human rights laws? I think saying you "respect" a countries laws and traditions is a way to escape our moral obligation to each other. We are firstly all part of the human race and respecting each other means not allowing terrible things to happen if we know about it. Its better to be disrespectful and kind to each other...

I think we are mixing up a few things here. If you look at do we need to respect peoples laws and cultures then you have to see why we have laws and can discrimination and violence be excused by tradition/religion or culture. I think people are afraid - FIFA are afraid and footballers are afraid because it is a big risk to stand up against such an extreme “culture” that uses laws to hurt people who are just being themselves. It’s just easier to not think about it and go along with it

So it’s better to ignore everything? It’s very hypocritical - if we ignore all the worlds problems, then what?
