I think social media could become a threat to humanity if we let it to we have a choice so it is really up to the consumer to make the choice if they what to use social media.I also think the tech companies can do better but we also have a responsibility to think is the information right or wrong and where it comes from

I agree, people need to be more aware of social media and that tech companies should be doing more to stop it being dangerous. I also think that we can’t lay all the blame on these companies. We need to take some responsibility on what we believe and what we disregard.

If social media targets the addiction based centres of your brain, why are they not regulated in the same way as alcohol and drugs where the minimum age is 18 and not 13? I think it’s not regulated in this way as the companies and government don’t care about your mental health as much as the physical implications that drugs and alcohol have. If the age restrictions of social media is 13 then the companies probably think the parents of the users will regulate their usage if the younger users can’t.

I think that people haven’t put a minimum age of 18 like other addiction based things ( alcohol and smoking) on social media because alcohol and smoking have shown impacts on your physical health and social media hasn’t. I don’t think that people have recognised the impact on some peoples mental health though... I think they have put an age limit of 13 on most accounts because it’s very addictive so they don’t want very young kids to have accounts, but 13 is still an age that people can be influenced a lot by their friends and others so the social media industry still makes a lot of money.

I think social media is a threat to humanity, It can do so many awful things, for example, people can get bullied so bad on social media and can even lead to them taking their own lives. Social media can also corrupt the minds of innocent people, children especially, it could become so addictive that it could stop them sleeping or eating properly. As this keeps getting worse and worse, we are slowly destroying our world.

I think that the ethical implications are that it’s wrong for companies to try and make you addicted to using there social media apps. If a companies sole model is to make money and profit from these social medias then there’s nothing wrong with that, but if they start using addiction based tactics to get there, then it becomes wrong. A company should not be trying to manipulate you.

This does change who you’re are.....? these platforms are manipulating us by subtly and in most cases subconsciously influencing our decisions, so then the question is left that are our choices what makes us ourselves, I don’t believe that our choices are what makes us, but they certainly effect us, so if after a long period of time you’re decisions are being manipulated, than that’s going to start to re-shape who you are or rather who others see you as, because our choices massively influence the image of you from other perspective, and I’m not saying that what other people’s point of view Is who you are, but then again if you are judging someone on one of their decisions (probably altered by social platforms) than you are also being manipulated because you’re judgment of this person is changed because of their and your subconscious manipulation.... I know that’s confusing sorry :)

I think it would be hard to undo it, but we could reduce it dramatically if we maybe show the alternatives to going on your phone/device, we could show people the way it was before we had all of this technology. The way this world was before social media was just as good if not better than today. We don’t have to stop social media completely, we just have to reduce the amount of time spent on it. Regarding further regulation, I think this could be difficult because social media is built on freedom of expression and if you try to control that you effect people’s freedom of speech.

Yes, I think it is because compared to now and in the 1900’s people have changed and now people have a different view of what society is and how people should look and what they should wear and what type of person they should be. But also people are more open now and aren’t as afraid to be who they are, for example people who are part of LGBTQ+ are more open and are accepted more.

I think that if social media isn’t controlled or monitored more closely, and soon, it will be a threat to humanity. Already, even though it hasn’t been around for very long, we can see huge increases in suicide rates all over the world. People may not believe that this is due to social media, but it nearly definitely is. Social media can have negative and positive impacts on the world. But the negatives are really bad, and if we don’t do anything about it soon, I believe it will only get worse

I think social media has a threat to humanity because company’s are taking peoples private information. They are also looking at what you have been looking at and using that to influence you. I don’t think it’s right for a company to use this information and manipulate you.

Social media can have both a positive and negative approach. It can be used to educate and chat. But it can also be used to spread hatred. And could be a threat to humanity. It would take ages to stop the treat but i think if we were determined enough we could make the media a better place and make it less toxic

I think that maybe it could become a treat to humanity but at the moment no. People can argue with things like how people are stuck playing games or texting but that’s not a real treat to humanity as we don’t have really high tech technology yet so it can’t do to much harm. Also this website is made on technology so if we didn’t have social media we couldn’t share these facts

I think social media can be a threat to humanity because people can use social media in a negative way e.g cyber bullying which may lead to suicide in some cases.

I think it depends on the way people are using social media some people use it for news or information and some people use it to spread hate on the internet

As a concept, social media is not a threat. However, the way it is used now can pose threat to lives of people. E.g beauty standards, companies taking data, cyberbullying, addiction, political propaganda, etc. However, social media is often used for good, creating communities where people can feel less alone, spreading useful information, etc.

Social media has been an great tool for creating human connection across the globe, however it has been tainted by greed, hate and violence.
